It’s time to pay my respects to SUN

January 21, 2010

Word is in that the EU has approved Oracle’s takeover of Sun Microsystems.

Companies come and go and I usually don’t take much notice, but Sun Microsystems was not “just another company of suits”. They managed their Java technology in an un-business-like way. That competitors such as IBM and Oracle put their golden eggs in the Java basket is a testament to this (not without friction of course). But more importantly it allowed for a huge ecosystem to grow – a very roomy one where hobbyists to enterprise developers from around the world have found a home. The number of frameworks and solutions built on Java to tackle just about anything I want to do as a developer shows the massive scale of the Java ecosystem.

I’ve already paid my respects here: James Gosling: So long old friend.
